John Dib & George Dib – Founders of Metro Petroleum

John Dib's career is a tribute to perseverance, foresight, and the fundamental spirit of entrepreneurship, from the hum of machinery at Marshall Batteries to overseeing a network of more than 350 service stations.

In 1978, John started his adventure at a little service station on Punchbowl Road. A friend’s faith in John’s “golden hands” for service station technicians and his passion for automobiles inspired him to pursue a career in petroleum service after he had previously worked as a machine operator at Marshall Batteries. This change would pave the way for an era of expansion and creativity spanning several decades.

John remembers, “My mate told me I should leave Marshall Batteries,” “He pushed me into it, and I haven’t looked back since.”

Making the decision to drop out of school wasn’t simple. John dropped out of school at the age of 14 years and 9 months in order to provide for his family. He was aware that his participation was essential because he had six siblings living at home. “My parents were working so hard,” he stated. “I couldn’t concentrate on school, so I left to work.”

The actual start of what would subsequently become a family heritage was John’s arrival at the Caltex service station. John forged a solid foundation in the industry by navigating the turbulent waters of gasoline strikes and intense competition with his father, and then with his brother George.

John remained unwavering in his resolve in the face of difficulties. “Caltex supported us, told us to stay, and then rewarded our hard work with 42 sites to manage,” he said. This assistance was essential because it arrived at a time when their fledgeling business was in danger of being overtaken by competitors.

John’s decision to go beyond Celtic’s grasp was a turning point in his career. “Caltex was unable to guarantee what my family business required. John explained, “I resigned and went to Mobile, who offered me 18 sites.” This audacious move was followed in 2004 by the acquisition of a distributorship, which resulted in substantial growth.

John’s focus on relationships and community is what makes him unique. His approach, which included enlisting friends, neighbours, and family members as partners, not only sped up expansion but also solidified the company’s position as a community-focused enterprise.

John remarked, “We built a nice name out there,” after considering the team effort. “People began approaching us and requesting to support or participate in our brand. That’s how we developed.

Under John Dib’s leadership, Metro Petroleum is a living example of the strength of tenacity, camaraderie, and strategic vision. His narrative is about fostering a community that develops together as well as about starting a business.

John came to the conclusion, “I could tell you all the stories for weeks, but that’s where we are. We sincerely appreciate the assistance from all of our friends, family, and businesses. Everyone was incredibly supportive of us.

The story of John Dib’s rise from a young mechanic to a prominent position in the petroleum sector is one of perseverance and achievement. His narrative highlights the spirit of Australian enterprise and serves as an inspiration to many.
