The Evolution of Metro Petroleum
Pioneering Excellence in the Fuel Industry
Metro Petroleum has grown from humble beginnings to become a leader in Australia’s fuel industry. Founded by the visionary entrepreneur John Dib, Metro Petroleum’s journey is a testament to innovation and strategic foresight.
The Foundational Years (1965-1985)
John Dib’s journey began when his parents migrated from Lebanon to Australia, with John starting his career as a paperboy before moving on to become a machine operator at Marshals Batteries. His entrepreneurial spirit soon led him to the fuel industry, opening his first Caltex franchise in 1978 in Lakemba. By 1981, Caltex had recognized his potential, entrusting him with 42 sites, a move that set the stage for significant expansion.
Expansion and Innovation (1985-1995)
The period from 1985 to 1995 was marked by substantial growth, with the franchise expanding to over 70 locations, including both Caltex and Mobil sites. John, along with his brother George, became pioneers in the Mobilis Rafs Program, showcasing their adaptability and commitment to market trends.
Strategic Growth (1995-2010)
This era was transformative as John and George merged their insights to create Metro Petroleum. They ventured into independent tobacco distribution, capturing over 34.2% of the market. The acquisition of Hill & Co from Exxon Mobil in 2005 marked a significant step in becoming a national distributor.
Recent Innovations and Community Engagement
Metro Petroleum entered Victoria in 2013, and by 2015, had created the Metro Zone, further diversifying with the creation of the Petit Cafe in 2021. The acquisition of Mr. Whippy in 2021 expanded their presence in the retail food sector. Today, Metro stands as the largest Independent Fuel Retailer in NSW and ACT, with over 319 locations, continuously aiming to enhance customer experience and community involvement.
John Dib’s leadership has not only expanded Metro Petroleum’s geographical footprint but also its scope in the retail and community sectors. His commitment to growth, community, and innovation continues to drive the company forward, promising a future as dynamic as its history.
